This refers to the velar nasal [ŋ-] occurring in the syllable-initial position. It is widely retained in Southern Sinitic and is prevalent in MSEA languages, but it has generally been lost in Northern Sinitic varieties, aligning with the tendency of having no initial velar nasal in most Altaic languages.
